Francistown / general information

The town of Francistown in Botswana is fast becoming a hub linking tourists to the majestic Victoria Falls. The town is home to about 92 500 people and growing at a tremendous pace. A scenic drive from Francistown to the Victoria Falls takes only a few hours. The Victoria Falls constitutes one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world. It is 1700 metres wide and around 100 metres high, this is the world's largest sheet of falling water and a memorable sight of any African Safari. Francistown was originally a gold-mining centre, but now days the town has expanded into a retail and wholesale shopping Mecca. It is strategically placed as the gateway to the north, with all the main roads to Gaborone, Zimbabwe, Maun and Kazungula passing through it.

The town boasts a range of good restaurants, sophisticated shopping malls, cinema, night clubs (including a popular jazz club called New Yorker), a couple of excellent hotels which offer fully equipped conference facilities, one of the largest referral hospitals in Botswana, an extensive library, sports facilities, well-kept parks and colorful markets. Francistown is still surrounded by the remnants of abandoned mines. Today more fortunes can be found in Francistown's couple of casinos than in the shallow shafts, and the real buzz is in the city's nightlife.

The once small town is now a centre for industry and commerce. The booming industrial sector has caused the population of this old town to double in the last decade. Accommodation in this town is of international standards and it is scattered close to some of Botswana's most fascinating sights, like the Salt Pans and the Tuli Block.

The climate of Botswana can be described as continental semi-arid. Due to the country’s location in the sub-tropical high pressure belt of the southern hemisphere rainfall is low and seasonal. It is in the interior of southern Africa far away from oceanic influences, and diurnal ranges of temperature are high. Francistown depicts its rainfall peak in November.
